Yo Sushi are doing a special offer this month, and a friend wanted to go to a London Loves set. So I thought let's combine that with a bit of DDR & Zombie killing at the Trocadero and make a day of it this Saturday. The doodle was for the Facebook event.

I'm off to play rude scrabble with EvilJ and iBon soon, but have some time to kill. Even though spelling is optional, I thought I'd look up the exact spelling of Gonasyphaherpaloids", and found that Skippy's List is being updated again. Including this fantastic tale of Battalion Commander receiving a squid to the face.

For anyone who hasn't seen it Skippy's List is a list of things that one soldier has been explicitly told that he is not allowed to do in the US army. Such as:

34. (Next day) Not allowed to chew gum at formation even if I *did* bring enough for everybody.
100. Claymore mines are not filled with yummy candy, and it is wrong to tell new soldiers that they are.
185. My name is not a killing word.

The squid thing isn't on the list, because it was technically allowed.

I'm currently cat sitting for an ex-neighbour of mine, while their on holiday. This has given me the opportunity to shamelessley pillage her daughter's book shelves, and I'm reading the entire Diana Wynne Jones back catalogue.

It suddenly struck me that Chrestomanci, and the current run of Dr Who, are really very similar. They're both Dues ex machina characters who turn up in strange worlds, or this world in a strange situation, get in trouble, then save the day for every one.

Most Dr Who episodes tend to start with the Dr turning up, and we follow the assitant as the problem is revealed ("Love and Monsters", and "Blink" being the exceptions). Where as in most Chrestomanci stories, we tend to see the problem developing, and Chrestomanci sweeps in much later. I think this perfectly reflects their mediums. Television tends to be very quick moving, whereas in a novel, there's a lot more time to lay the ground work.

I stopped using Live Journal just before the fanfiction clampdown. I don't just mean I stopped posting, (although obviously I did), I stopped reading anything on Live Journal. It was a combination of a few things, covered below, but basically I'm back now.

I was prompted into posting today by a post at Websnark on the re-deleting of fanfic. I think he has a point that Six Apart are mad to be doing this. Other social networking sites are on the rise, and pissing off your paying userbase when the competition is so strong is not smart.

Which leads onto the first reason for my LJ Gafiation. Facebook. I have rapidly become completely addicted to it. Losing my WAP phone for a week, and work's firewall have slowed me down, but still love it. I should post a bunch of my more surreal status updates sometime soon. The Live Journal feature I'd like to see most on it, is custom friends groups.

While I was spending my internet time on Facebook, I paid less attention to my feed reader. It was only when talking to [livejournal.com profile] offensive_mango on Facebook that I noticed that I seen her Live Journal update for a while. Or any Live Journal. Bloglines had been failing on the Live Journal feeds. Their customer service was pretty good for a free site. A fairly typical two days to reply, but it wasn't a form response. I replied with the information they wanted, and they fixed the problem a few hours later.

This lead to what I'll term forum bankruptcy. I like to go back through the archives of webcomics, forums, and blogs, to not leave gaps when I've been away from the net for a while. This problem is it leads to me abandoning things when I can't bring myself to up to date, and then it only gets worse. So I'm declaring forum bankruptcy on Live Journal, and am not going to try and catch up with all the posts I missed. I'll try and keep up now though.

Finally I've spent a lot of time travelling with with work to Eastern Europe recently. I'm not complaining about that. It's been nice to see these places, but it has left me with even less spare time than normal.

Another reason for posting again was that Dave Licence asked why I hadn't posted for a while. Which reminds me I forgot to comment on his amazing photo of a household spider. The way the focus is so tight on the center reminded me of Tilt Shift photography, and I was going to ask Dave how he did it. Until I remembered that the whole point of tilt shift is to fake the look that happens naturally when you're shooting something small. If you're reading this Dave, thanks twice over.

Reckless Life is an action packed comic, following the life of a wise-cracking, small-time (but high-tech and skilled) thief.

It's incredibly well drawn in a style that reminds me of Batman: The Animated Series. The coulouring scheme, greyscale with lots of red, gives it a distinctive atmosphere. A lot of the comments on there seem to be suggesting Tim Demeter should get this made as an animated series.

Websnark once wrote that one of the difficult thing in story telling was switching between a silly bit of fun, and character driven plot. Especially while consistently brining the funny. I think he said that Sluggy Freelance was a master at this. Tim is just as good at this.

Here's a character driven strip on finding someone with your ex.
Here's a silly fun strip on a week of random Ninja attacks.

Another quick post for all you Comic Sans MS haters.

I saw this a while ago via [personal profile] offensive_mango but the link had been deleted. I did a bit of digging and here's the city of Rome's recognition of the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

The comments on the BBC's piece on the Helvetica font turning 50, seem to be split between hate, praise, humour, and a profound loathing for Comic Sans MS.

Good for them :)

I almost missed the cute detail in the background of today's Nukees.

Looking back through a few random bar strips, Gav really does a good job at populating the bar with distinctive characters in the background. They're not usually so exciting though.

I also noticed a change in style. It's quite gradual but in old closeups you get more detail. Then closeups became not different to the rest of the comic. Now closeups have a thicker line. With line thickness becoming a very good indicator of distance from the viewer.

X-posted to Snarkoleptics.

Some thought's on Zooomr, having used it for a week or so.

Contrary to what I said before about a large upload limit, they in fact offer "Unlimited Upload, Archival and storage for your photos — forever!"

That sounds very nice, but then where's their revenue stream going to come from? They've lost their investor, so I'm not sure they can store images forever.

They don't seem to have an easy to search for all the photos a user has tagged in a particular way. The user can create a "smartset" that filters photos based on a range of critia (user, tags, date taken, date uploaded, number of views, and other users in the photo). But these a really buggy, and blank out all the time.

The rotation feature seems to work on a delay. When you try and use it, it seems to fail, but if you check again after a short while, the images have been rotated correctly.

If you rotate a photo with juploadr program they recomend for bulk uploading, it gets rotated in the opposite direction.

They still haven't fixed my profile page.

There's supposed to be a big upgrade soon, but if [livejournal.com profile] the_magician is reading this, I recommend using someone else for Worldcon photos.

At last!

Those of you using Google calender can now set reminders on non-primary calendars. Whether it's a secondary one (I use one for Birthdays), or a public one (like this one I just found for Ian M. Bank appearances).
