Come on it's obvious.

If the whole reason for an allowance is so that not only those who can afford two homes can be MPs, then do what New Labour always do. Means Test the MPs before they can claim.

The allowance is also to ensure that those who could afford to run two homes out of their own pocket are nevertheless not dissuaded from becoming MPs by the considerable cost of doing so.

But New Labour don't think this sort of means tested cost will put people off going to uni, or saving for retirement, so why should it put off someone who really wants to be an MP?

I know my Nana certainly didn't by new carpets just because her savings were talking her out of a means testing bracket.
