Agnostics are just atheists without the courage of their convictions: A rebuttal..

I consider myself to be a strong agnostic. I believe that there's no way to dis-prove a gods' existence. Therefore Atheism, as a belief that there is no such thing, simply isn't justified. But at the same time I cannot envision a set of circumstances that would lead me to beleive in a god. Essentially I think religion's are pretty much a moot point.

Having said that I can accept that others have had experiences that lead them to have a different belief structure to my own. I've just yet to hear one that's come anywhere near impacting me.

I find agnosticism to be the only rigorously defensible viewpoint, however to all practical intents and purposes:

  • I have yet to see any evidence that convinces me that any supernatural being exists
  • Satisfactory (to me) explanations that do not involve a supernatural being seem to work well enough

so by applying Occam's razor I'm quite happy to informally accept Atheism.

Emotionally, I'm even more drawn towards strong atheism because I feel that religion

  • causes one to abrogate one's responsibility for one's actions in this world in favour of 'doing what you're told to get a better life in the next one'
  • has been used to belittle, abuse, oppress, and slaughter people ever since we had the ability to chuck rocks at one another
  • enforces hierarchy and dependency on authority, is easily used as a means of controlling 'hearts and minds' and as a way of stifling creativity.

I took the leap of unfaith from rational agnostic to Strong And Proud Atheist many years ago - not only do I not accept the existence of any deity, I actively reject that existence and admire those who share and promote that view.
