Hello / Goodbye adverts

I've never moved off of the basic LJ account, as I don't want to pay for one (I don't use this enough) and I'd feel hypercritical using the add supported version with an add blocker.

I use ad-blockers for three main reasons.

1) I don't like the idea of my net habits being tracked. It's a little creepy. A lot of adservers place a cookie on your computer when you visit a site, and check it when you visit any other affiliated site. For the same reason, I have Firefox set to delete cookies upon exiting.

2) As Charlie Stross describes sheer file size issue.

3) Garishness, and relevance. I haven't updated my blacklist in a while so this little beauty from feedads.googleadservices.com got through.

Charming. I know it's trying to catch your attention, but so do newspaper ads. I can't imagine something that garish, or offensive even in a red top.

Given that people without LiveJournals will get ads when they visit anyway, I'll upgrade, and give the ads a chance. If they fail on any of above three, I'll block 'em, and not feel to guilty.

So, woo, polls, and slightly more user-icons.

{edit}
Ah, it looks like they require Javascript to be enabled in order to serve me adverts. Given the number of people who've been posting spam on my facebook wall,having been caught by an XSS vulnerability, I'm not enabling it just for adverts.

However, Unreltated posting, I just looked at your "LibraryThing" - Cool idea, buthow do people get the time to do these cataloging type things? I'm still struggling to get time to update my Ravelry!
